Protests After the Inauguration of Ahmadinejad sanctioned by Ayatollah Khamenei

Protests and heavy clashes in various sections of Tehran have been reported. Protests began in the evening in the Vanak Square area, Vali Asr Square, and the Satarkhan district. Government forces used massive amount of teargas in those areas. In the southern part of the city, in Naziabad (an old poor section of Tehran famous for its allegiance to Islam) the protestors surprised paramilitary Basij and antiriot police by fighting back and by not running away. For a while the area was completely in the hands of people when government forces ran away in panic.

At 6:30 pm it was reported that the Karaj-Tehran highway was blocked by state buses and the drivers were chant chanting “down with the dictator”.
From the city of Shiraz there are reports of heavy clashes between demonstrators and police and paramilitaries. Some 3 protestors have been killed. There is a massive paramilitary presence. The center of Shiraz is in a state of siege.
