September 8th, Tehran. Ali Reza Beheshti Mousavi’s right-hand man has been arrested. This can be seen as a new chapter in the post election arrest episode in Iran. Mr. Beheshti is one of the two sons of the late Ayatollah Beheshti, one the most important founders of Islamic Republic (died in 1981). His arrest is a clear message to the Green movement and its supporters among the elite of the Islamic Republic: nobody can count on being secure from this new wave of oppression, even the children of the icons of the Islamic Republic. The daughters of Mr. Rafsanjani and Hassan Khomeini (grandson of Ayathollah Khomeini) are among others from the most elite revolutionary Iranian families who support Mr. Mousavi.
Ali Reza Beheshti was chief editor of Mousavi’s newspaper, which was closed after the election, Kalameh Sabz (The green word). He was also the representative of Mr. Mousavi in the non-governmental committee which was established to investigate the post-election arrests. Last Saturday, in Mr. Mousavi’s 11th statement, he published an extended manifesto that invited the protesters to deepen and continue their protest. It has been said that Mr. Beheshti had a major part in composing this manifesto. The second message of this arrest is undoubtedly toward Mousavi: “You can be next”.
